Featured November Artists
Sunshine Moeschler
Sunshine Moeschler is a mixed media artist in Napa, California. She has displayed her work in the Art Gallery Napa Valley continuously since 2007. Her evolving style is concerned with color, movement, and emotion. A painting contains the DNA of the artist, and yet is different each time it is seen through someone’s eyes. Sunshine is encouraged by knowing that every day her work brings joy and energy to her collectors. Her nature inspired paintings and assemblage dresses are housed in private collections throughout the world.
Shelly Hanan
At the age of five, Shelly Hanan discovered her heart’s desire when she received a Kodak Brownie Camera for her birthday. After taking an astonishing number of portraits of her three-year-old sister, she turned the camera on the world around her.
Growing up in New York, in an area that was once considered the boondocks but is now a bedroom community for NYC, Shelly enjoyed the benefits of country life, such as catching frogs barehanded, along with the vibrant experiences that Manhattan had to offer. She moved to Arcata, California, to attend Humboldt State University, where she specialized in fine art photography. Upon returning to New York, Shelly continued her education at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where she received her teaching certification in K-12 Art Education.
Shelly has exhibited in the United States at Select Fair during Frieze, New York, as well as at both Spectrum and Red Dot during Art Basel in Miami. Internationally, her work has been showcased in London, England, and Budapest, Hungary. She received two public art installation awards in Napa, California, and had her most significant opportunity when two photographs were accepted into a show at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, CA.
One of the most beneficial aspects of her practice has been serving as an Artist-in-Residence. Having the time and space to focus solely on art has proven extraordinary for Shelly. During her residency at Starry Night in New Mexico, she explored the West on two occasions. She also had an eye-opening experience in Budapest, Hungary, at the Hungarian Multicultural Center (HMC), where her work was featured in an international exhibit and a worldwide collaborative exhibit sponsored by the HMC and the state of Texas.
Monroe Katz
Monroe Katz is a rare blend of talents: a dentist by profession, and an award-winning author, painter and sculptor. His difficult emergence as an artist has been a primary subject of his writing. His debut novel, Sparring with Rembrandt, chronicled his struggles growing up in Brooklyn, caught between his love of art and the difficult post-war demands of earning a living. A chapter was awarded a coveted first prize in the Napa Valley’s Jessamyn West writing contest. Dr. Katz’s next book was a sophisticated “how to” guide for aspiring painters and sculptors, based on his own personal journey as an artist. Dare To Create, The Joys and Tortures of Learning to Paint was hailed by the Eric Hoffer Awards as one of the best art books of 2018. His poetry and artwork have won awards as well. His Rembrandt-like portrait of a young woman named Daphne was named “Best of Show” in the annual Napa Exposition. With his new book, Light and Shadow, An Artist’s Awakening, Dr. Katz plunges his sensitive hero, Norman, into the decisive phase of his artistic journey: a rigorous, and often painful apprenticeship under the wing of a bullying, troubled, but brilliant mentor named Kelly. Despite his brutal ways, Kelly brings Norman exactly what he needs: a creative liberation. Now retired from dentistry, Dr. Katz continues his creative life with his wife Joan and their extended families close by.
Ricky Lee
Ricky Lee is a 56-year-old Napa native who discovered his artistic talents in 2006, when he began taking art classes. Ricky’s artwork can suggest abstracts, colorful dreams, even apocalyptic chaos. Faces and words may appear amid the flourishes; the more you gaze, the more Lee reveals.
William McIntyre
A self-taught cartoonist with a passion for figurative illustration in acrylic ink and watercolor, the artist holds a BA in journalism and has pursued graduate work in political theory and history. With a background in welding, fitting, and burning, they have also worked in architectural decorative metals, specializing in steel with ornate blacksmithing. Additionally, they have experience in steel detailing, creating shop drawings using programs like Autocad, Sigmanest, and Tekla, while overseeing automated burning and cutting machines.
Embracing a whimsical and contemporary style, the artist’s work often leans towards the abstract in depicting the human form and condition, drawing inspiration from Cubism and surrealism. While they acknowledge the digital influence in art, they personally prefer hands-on techniques, finding more enjoyment in traditional methods. Now fully immersed in their artistic pursuits, they are eager to share their unique creations with the world.
For those looking to add a touch of whimsy and contemporary flair to their home or office decor, prints of the artist’s work are available for purchase. Whether you’re drawn to their abstract human forms or surrealistic influences, their pieces are sure to make a statement in any space. Explore their collection today and bring a piece of their imaginative world into your own.
Zion Lee
Following his passion for cars and racing, 14 year old emerging photographer Zion Lee has spent many a day at the track with camera in tow. Utilizing his Nikon D80, Zion captures the essence of the automotive industry – the beauty of the iconic hood ornament, legacy cars and brands, vintage and modern designs as well as the iconic dashboards and engine machinery. The viewer is truly led to feel in the present company of Zion’s day-in-the-life-of-a-car-lover through the lens of his camera and photographs.
Sayon Syprasoeuth
Sayon Syprasoeuth is an artist, a community activist and a teacher. He received his Master of Fine Art (MFA) from Claremont Graduate University (CGU, 2007), Sayon’s collages and images are reflective of his own journey as a Cambodian refugee – from his shocking exile from his childhood village on the Cambodian-Thai border (June 1975), to his scary passage into Thailand countryside.
Aragna Ker
A native of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Aragna Ker was born in 1974. He immigrated to Southern California, at the age of six.
Aragna Ker is currently employed as the Curatorial and Adaptive Design Manager for Momentum Creative (formerly United Cerebral Palsy Los Angeles), specializing in developing inclusive tools and artistic programming to adults with disabilities.
Oliver Kolay
Still based in Yangon, 66-year-old Kolay learned painting in the 1970s during the reign of Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma, which at the time was led by President Ne Win. The Ne Win government, which tried to follow its own path through Burmese socialism, excluded foreign capital investment and promoted the nationalization of businesses. As a result, people’s lives grew increasingly impoverished.
Ami Bhatt
Ami Bhatt is based in San Francisco and has been running her jewelry line, Ami Ratnam, for about a year. Her great-grandfather was the rajpurohit (royal administrator) of Alirajpur in Madhya Pradesh, where the king and queen gifted him ancient jewelry that has since become a family heirloom. Born in Dakor, home to the famous Krishna mandir, Ami spent her childhood serving in the temple, decorating the murti with holy clothes and jewelry. She filled her days reading historical fiction and nonfiction and traveling across India to explore ancient castles and fortresses, experiences that deeply instilled a love for Indian culture and heritage, which continues to inspire her work today.
Recently, Ami had the opportunity to turn her dreams into reality when she met an artisan couple in India. This talented husband and wife team helped bring her jewelry designs to life, merging her knowledge of Indian culture and ancient jewelry with her own imaginative flair to create modern, historically inspired pieces.
Her designs draw inspiration from various regions and cultures of India, with a focus on Rajasthani, Afghani, tribal, and Kashmiri styles. Additionally, she fuses Mughal and temple jewelry elements into unique patterns, and she incorporates influences from pichwai and basuli painting into her new creations. Ami feels both happy and humble to share her work with others.
Katrina Gocan
Born in Poland, Katrina is inspired by the individual’s inner journey, and how myths, stories and culture shape a person’s, and by extension, a society’s vision of themselves. A late bloomer, she started painting in her mid 40’s and works with acrylic, watercolor and collage. Much of her work incorporates the female form and seeks to find the confluence of the universal and the deeply personal in the many faceted search for identity.
